SCHOOL BOARD BRIEF

March 25, 2025

A summary of the Warren County Schools Board of Education meetings. This is not the official minutes of the meeting.

Board Recognitions

March is Arts in Schools Month!

The Board of Education and Interim Superintendent Dr. Carol Montague-Davis were treated to a sample of how our students benefit from arts classes like chorus, theater, and visual arts.

Artwork from Northside Elementary students decorated the lobby of the Warren County Schools Auxiliary Building as people showed up for the board meeting. Ms. Meghin Fuller is the art teacher at Northside Elementary. She introduced board members to a student who contributed artwork to the beautiful entry display.

The Mariam Boyd Elementary School Chorus, under the direction of their new music teacher, Mr. Develle Pierce, performed Lean on Me by Bill Withers.

Students from Warren County Middle School told board members what they've gained by taking theater classes with Theater Arts teacher Ms. Nichole Gibbs. They also showed some of their student work incorporating math, measurements, engineering, and visual arts for set design on the theater stage.

Warren County Emergency Services Recognition

The Board of Education and Interim Superintendent Dr. Carol Montague-Davis extended our sincere appreciation to Warren County Emergency Services—including the Fire Departments, Police Departments, and Emergency Management—for their swift and coordinated response to the dump truck fire on the campus of Mariam Boyd Elementary School on February 28, 2025. Their professionalism, dedication, and commitment to the safety of our students, staff, and community exemplify the highest standards of public service. We are deeply grateful for their continued partnership and unwavering support of our school system.

Students at Mariam Boyd Elementary showed their appreciation earlier Tuesday afternoon with a special “clapout parade” for emergency responders. Students made heartfelt signs and thank you cards for those emergency responders. They lined the hallways of the school, sang, cheered, gave high-fives, and gave hugs to emergency responders as they walked through the halls.

The Board of Education and Interim Superintendent Dr. Carol Montague-Davis honored three high school students selected from more than 1,850 statewide nominees to attend the 2025 session of the North Carolina Governor’s School:

  • Stephanie Green – Mathematics | Warren Early College High School

  • Araceli Recentes – Natural Science | Warren Early College High School

  • Seth Weinberg – Visual Arts | Warren County High School

The North Carolina Governor's School is a four-week summer residential program that integrates academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses for gifted and talented high school students. To be awarded this opportunity, students must be nominated by their school district and undergo a competitive selection process.

Congratulations to these students on this well-deserved honor! Thank you to School Counselors Ms. Teresa Taylor and Ms. Lenora Parks for their invaluable support throughout the nomination process.

Youth Legislative Assembly

The Board of Education and Interim Superintendent Dr. Carol Montague-Davis recognized these seven students who participated in the Youth Legislative Assembly March 7-9 at the General Assembly in Raleigh.

  • Alonna Evans

  • Demetrius McKinzie

  • Summer Murphy

  • Kmira Richardson

  • Shaira Saldo

  • Evan Silver

  • Juan Tavira

The Youth Legislative Assembly (YLA) is a mock legislative session where high school students become state law makers to better understand how our local, state, and national governments work. Active participation in YLA increases students' confidence and ability to debate current issues.

Thanks to Mr. Moguel at Warren Early College High School for helping organize and chaperone this wonderful opportunity for students.

National School Social Work Week

The Board of Education and Interim Superintendent Dr. Carol Montague-Davis celebrated our Social Workers as part of School Social Workers Week (March 2-8, 2025). We recognize the vital role these dedicated professionals play in supporting the whole child. School social workers are the bridge between home, school, and community, ensuring that students have the resources and support they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Their tireless efforts in advocacy, crisis intervention, and emotional support make a lasting impact on students’ lives. We thank them for being champions of equity, empathy, and student success.

Our School Social Workers:

  • Lakola Andrews

  • Tabitha Alston

Reality of Money at WCMS

We’re excited to partner with the State Employees Credit Union for the Reality of Money hands-on learning experience at Warren County Middle School tomorrow. Seventh and eighth grade students will learn about real-world budgeting. They’re assigned a job and a salary. Then, they have to make financial decisions at various spending stations such as housing, transportation, food, insurance, and entertainment. It’s an eye-opening way to learn about needs versus wants and responsible money management.

Our sixth graders got a similar lesson earlier this month in partnership with Coastal Credit Union.

Blood Drives

Mariam Boyd Elementary is holding a blood drive on Monday, March 31 from noon until 5 p.m. in the multipurpose room. Through the Future Blood Donor program, if a student recruits someone to donate blood, the student gets a free gift. Go to RedCrossBlood.org and use the sponsor code “Mariam Boyd” to sign up to donate or to volunteer to help with the blood drive.

Warren County High School is holding a blood drive on Tuesday, April 15 from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. in the media center. This blood drive is sponsored by the school’s Space Force JROTC. Go to RedCrossBlood.org and search “EaglesNest” to sign up to donate.

Donors will receive Amazon gift cards for donating during either blood drive.
