As students and staff settle into the second 6-week grading period, life at Mariam Boyd looks much differently than just one year ago. Fall before COVID-19 meant a whirlwind of activities for students at MBES. Typically, October is filled to the brim with activities and events. Parent teacher conferences, the book fair, muffins with mom, and our Multicultural Extravaganza have all been halted and replaced with virtual learning and remote classrooms.
Although our school halls sit empty and events have been cancelled, a silver lining has emerged as we settle into our “new normal.” Despite the grim conditions brought forth by the 2020 school year, learning is still happening at Mariam Boyd.
Students and teachers have taken the drastic changes to a typical school day in stride as we work virtually through Google Classroom and attend lessons via Zoom. Mariam Boyd students have become adept at working with technology, and teachers have broadened their skill sets regarding the best and most engaging virtual platforms.
Mariam Boyd parents have worked tirelessly to engage collaboratively with teachers while staying up-to-date and in tune with school announcements, student progress, and remote learning changes. Parents teachers conferences went off without a hitch, with 91% parent attendance.
Regardless of the challenges that remote learning presents, growth is happening at MBES. If nothing else, COVID-19 has forced all those involved in the School System to embrace uncertainty, think outside the box, and appreciate the things we may have once taken for granted. Mariam Boyd is so thankful for the partnerships of students and families and looks forward to returning to school in the future where we will continue our learning together.
