Just a reminder to all JUNIORS that the state of NC requires participation in the ACT, which will be administered in person, free of charge, here at New Tech next Tues., Feb. 23. All social distancing protocols will be in effect, and students need to arrive no later than 8 AM.
While the ACT is a paper and pencil exam, students will need to bring their school-issued Chromebooks to access information that must be completed on the test.

As you know, your virtual Math 1 benchmark test is slated for next Wednesday, February 24. Packets including your test code and ancillary test materials may be picked up here in the main office through noon Friday. Best wishes on this important exam!

On this day in 1968, Henry Lewis becomes the first African-American to lead a symphony orchestra in the United States. A child prodigy, he was also the first African-American instrumentalist in a major American symphony orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, which he joined at the age of sixteen in 1948.
On February 12, 1909, the 100th anniversary of the birth of President Abraham Lincoln, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is founded in an organizational meeting in New York City.

As you know, the state Math 1 check-in will be administered during your regularly scheduled virtual Math 1 class on Wednesday, February 24. You will need to use your school-issued Chromebook to access the exam. A packet containing your test code as well as graph and plain paper you may use in taking the test can be picked up here on campus between 9-3 weekdays. Best wishes!
On this day in 1990, after being detained as a political prisoner for nearly three decades, Nelson Mandela is released from a South African prison. Upon his passing in 2013, President Barack Obama wrote, “his journey from prisoner to president embodied the promise that human beings and countries can change for the better.”

Fifty-seven years ago today, the United States House of Representatives, after nearly two weeks of debate and voting on over one hundred amendments, passes the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which President Lyndon Johnson signs into law on July 2.
Our Valentine’s “Salute to Scholars” gets started tomorrow at 9:00 and continues until 5:00; members of the Principal’s List and Honor Roll can drop by campus for certificates of commendation and “study snacks” distributed at the front doors! Congratulations, Knights!
On this day in 1953, Ralph Ellison’s novel Invisible Man wins the National Book Award. In addition to his literary prowess, Ellison was an accomplished trumpeter and award-winning freelance photographer who taught at several universities, including Yale.
