As you know, all high school juniors in NC are required under state law to take the American College Testing (ACT) exam (please see our website post of January 27 for more complete details). This test will be administered free-of-charge here on campus on Tuesday, February 23. The ACT is part of the NC school accountability program and colleges use results for admission decisions and the like. If you qualify for an exemption, you must complete the NCDPI exemption form available at the school by Friday, February 5.

On this day in 1914, eminent geneticist Dr. Ernest Just won the NAACP’s inaugural Springarn Medal for his pioneering studies in cell division. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth, he went on to earn his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago and serve as a professor at Howard University.

On this day in 1926, what is now Black History Month began under the leadership of Dr. Carter G. Woodson. A distinguished professor at Howard University, he earned his Ph.D. at Harvard and founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
