Fifty-seven years ago today, the United States House of Representatives, after nearly two weeks of debate and voting on over one hundred amendments, passes the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which President Lyndon Johnson signs into law on July 2.
Our Valentine’s “Salute to Scholars” gets started tomorrow at 9:00 and continues until 5:00; members of the Principal’s List and Honor Roll can drop by campus for certificates of commendation and “study snacks” distributed at the front doors! Congratulations, Knights!
On this day in 1953, Ralph Ellison’s novel Invisible Man wins the National Book Award. In addition to his literary prowess, Ellison was an accomplished trumpeter and award-winning freelance photographer who taught at several universities, including Yale.

On this day in 1986, Oprah Winfrey becomes the first African-American woman to host a nationally syndicated talk show. Her show becomes the highest-rated daytime talk show in U.S. television history.
On this day in 1990, future President Barack Obama becomes the first African-American to serve as president of the prestigious Harvard Law Review.

On this day in 1913, Rosa McCauley Parks, often called “the mother of the freedom movement,” was born in Tuskegee, Alabama. Her refusal to give up her seat for White passengers on the segregated Montgomery Bus Line in 1955 was a seminal event in the civil rights movement.
On this day in 1920, baseball’s Negro Leagues were founded. Last December, MLB, in a decision characterized by Commissioner Rob Manfred as “long overdue,” announced that statistics from the Negro Leagues would henceforth be recognized as having Major League status. ⚾️
As you know, all high school juniors in NC are required under state law to take the American College Testing (ACT) exam (please see our website post of January 27 for more complete details). This test will be administered free-of-charge here on campus on Tuesday, February 23. The ACT is part of the NC school accountability program and colleges use results for admission decisions and the like. If you qualify for an exemption, you must complete the NCDPI exemption form available at the school by Friday, February 5.

On this day in 1914, eminent geneticist Dr. Ernest Just won the NAACP’s inaugural Springarn Medal for his pioneering studies in cell division. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth, he went on to earn his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago and serve as a professor at Howard University.
On this day in 1926, what is now Black History Month began under the leadership of Dr. Carter G. Woodson. A distinguished professor at Howard University, he earned his Ph.D. at Harvard and founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
